PDO threads have been used for decades, although they only recently became a widely used cosmetic treatment. Historically, medical practitioners used these threads as sutures during surgery. That’s because they can be safely absorbed by your body over time. Unlike the PDO threads used for surgical sutures, Dr. Roberto Penne-Casanova, MD primarily uses PDO threads that have directional barbs or twists along them. He places these threads wherever your skin needs a lifting and tightening effect. He uses a specialized cannula to place the thread in the desired location. Once in place, the barbs or twists anchor the thread, ensuring that it can lift your skin to the desired location. But that’s not all. The placement of the thread itself triggers your skin to produce collagen, the protein that keeps your skin smooth and tight. As your skin slowly absorbs the thread in the coming months, it’s replaced by a new network of collagen. This means the results from a PDO thread lift can last approximately 18 months or more.
A beautiful and healthy face has a “V-shape”. With the ageing of tissues and the action of gravity, this “V-shape” diminishes or inverts. The idea behind the NovaMesh and the NovaLyft technique is to either create a scaffolding in order to support the tissues and keep them in the “V-shape” or where necessary to delicately lift the tissues and reposition the skin to recreate the “V-shape” where it’s been lost.

PDO are hypodermic needles preloaded with a synthetic PDO absorbable suture. PDO (polydioxanone) sutures are surgical sutures that are used to perform cardiac surgery. Pain can be usually managed with acetaminophen (Tylenol) and/or ibuprofen (Advil). If stronger pain medicine is desired, it can be prescribed by our physician. You may have mild swelling and bruising for few days. Icing the treated area as well as arnica is recommended for the first few days. We recommend avoiding strenuous activity for few days.
Like any procedure using a needle, there is a chance of bruising and swelling. However, in most people, the bruising and swelling is minimal and resolve in less than a week. There is some post-op discomfort which usually resolves quickly in most patients. If the sutures, for some reason, become visible underneath the skin or migrate, it can be easily removed if necessary and new threads can be placed.
Originally Contour threads received FDA approval in early 2006 which was quickly revoked due to the nature of the threads permanence. These threads were not “absorbable” and could not be removed once they were inserted. EuroThreads uses a biodegradable suture that has been FDA approved for decades in cardiovascular surgery. In 2015, the FDA approved the same suture for aesthetic treatments. Thread lifting can be used for treatments to the face, neck and body.
Yes, the use of PDO and PLLA threads have been FDA approved as a medical device for use in soft tissue approximation where the implantation of surgical sutures is appropriate.

EuroThreads are individual biodegradable, surgical sutures that are pre-inserted into a needle or cannula.
A single thread is inserted into either a needle or a cannula during the manufacturing process and then sterilized. A single needle or cannula (thread) is individually inserted into the dermis and upon removal, the thread is left in place. The thread is either left in place to promote collagen production or is pulled in an intended direction to produce an appearance commonly associated with lifting.
Slight chance of infection or bruising at injection site. Possible but rare chance for thread extrusion.
Oncology patients or patients with Keloid tendency, bleeding disorders, acne are some conditions that PDO threads are not recommended.
Yes, there are no contraindications that prevent the use of neurotoxins and fillers with EuroThreads. Both neurotoxins and fillers take some time to produce the desired result so this could change or negatively augment any threading results. It is recommended to let the neurotoxins and filler set in before inserting EuroThreads. This will ensure that the patient has the best opportunity to get the maximum effects from both treatments.
